Clay Street) for a discussion by Tim Kopra, Partner at Blue Bear Capital and former NASA Astronaut and Commander of the International Space Station.

 Tim Kopra is a partner with Blue Bear Capital, a venture capital firm investing in companies that provide innovative technologies for the energy supply chain.  He is also a venture partner with LunaCap Ventures, a venture debt firm that focuses on veteran, women, and minority-owned businesses, and an advisor for a private equity firm and a medical start-up company.  Tim serves as a senior faculty member at the Institute for Personal Leadership and a leadership instructor with Thayer Leader Development Group.

Previously, Tim served as a NASA astronaut. While at NASA, Tim lived and worked on the International Space Station, completing two spaceflights and three spacewalks over the span of 244 days.  On Tim’s most recent mission from December 2015 to June 2016, he copiloted a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and served as a flight engineer on Expedition 46 and ISS Commander for Expedition 47.

Tim served in the U.S. Army for 25 years as an Army aviator.  He was deployed to Operations Desert Shield and Storm and then commanded an AH-64 Attack Helicopter Company.  Following studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology and completing the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School, Tim served as the Developmental Test Director for the Army’s Comanche Program until his assignment to NASA in 1998.  Tim was selected as an astronaut in 2000.

Tim’s commendations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal, and NASA Distinguished Service Medal. 

Tim earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy (’85), a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech, and Masters of Business Administration from Columbia Business School and London Business School.
